By the next day 259 of them will take to the lifeboats; of those 15 will survive. 1999: Cubana de Aviación Flight 310 flies into a hill on approach to Valencia Airport in Venezuela. 2003: UTA Flight 141 crashes in the Bight of Benin with 12 survivors out of 163.

1944: The SS Leopoldville is torpedoed by U-486 in the English Channel; over 760 soldiers are lost. 1953: An express train crossing the damaged Whangaehu River Bridge at Tangiwai, NZ is derailed, killing 151. 1971: LANSA Flight 508 breaks apart in mid-air over the Amazon in Peru; the sole survivor, Juliane Koepcke emerges from the jungle 10 days later.
