This Day In Wrecks
1863: The CSS Alabama, after being chased down by the USS Hatteras near Galveston Light, opens fire and sinks the Union ship. (pictured)
1938: A Pan American Sikorsky S-42 flying boat, the Samoan Clipper, suffers engine problems after takeoff, and comes back to Pago Pago for an emergency landing, circling and dumping fuel from the wing vents in preparation. The fuel vapor gathers around the flaps, which are extended to provide lift, and eventually causes an explosion that kills all 7 on board.
1947: A BOAC flight crashes in Stowting, England while attempting to land at Lympne, killing 8 of the 16 people on the Douglas C-47; the plane is fuel starved after multiple diversions that took it from London to France and back.
