This Day In Wrecks
1881: The USS Jeannette sinks in the Arctic after being trapped in pack ice and drifting for 21 months. Several men from the party make it back to Siberian settlements, but the rest of the party, including expedition leader Lieutenant Commander George W. DeLong, perish in the sea or on the tundra. (pictured is a map of their route.)
1996: Garuda Indonesia Flight 865 crashes during an aborted takeoff at Fukuoka Airport in Japan, after the number 3 engine fails; the DC-10 had already approached takeoff speed and ran through a fence onto a road, tearing off the landing gear and the wing engines and breaking open the fuselage. Three people were killed but the other 272 aboard survived. The engine failure was caused by a turbine blade that was past the replacement date.
