1950: TWA 903 loses an engine after a fire, crashing in the desert outside of Cairo. All 55 people on the Lockheed Constellation are killed.
1986: A Piper PA-28 and an Aeromexico DC-9 collide over Cerritos, CA after the Piper strays into LAX airspace. Everyone on Flight 498 and the private plane are killed, as well as 15 people on the ground. (pictured)
1986: The bulk carrier Pyotr Vasev collides with the passenger liner SS Admiral Nakhimov, which sinks rapidly in the Black Sea. 423 of the 1.234 people on board are killed. Reports of the sinking are censored until September 5th. The Nakhimov was built as the SS Berlin III for Germany in 1925 and had once hit a mine and beached in 1945, before being salvaged by the Soviets.
