This Day In Wrecks
1993: Lufthansa Flight 2904 skids off the runway while landing in the rain in Warsaw. A tailwind had caught the plane, while the pilots had been preparing for a reported crosswind by banking right, and the plane continued down the runway with only the right landing gear in contact with the ground for 9 seconds. This caused the reverse thrust and ground spoilers to delay deployment, followed by the main brakes failing to engage due to hydroplaning. The A320 rolled off into an embankment; the co-pilot and 1 passenger were killed in the crash and ensuing fire.
