1996: Past rotation and near their V2 speed, the pilots of Garuda Indonesia Flight 865 abort their takeoff from Fukuoka Airport when the right engine fails. Unable to bring the DC-10 to a stop, the plane overshoots the runway and breaks into pieces. All but 3 of the 275 people on board survive. Investigation reveals the cause of the engine failure to be a turbine blade that is beyond the replacement date.

About 1852 c.d.t., on October 20, 1977 a convair 240, N55VM, owned and operated by L & J Company and transporting the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, crashed 5 miles northeast of Gillsburg, Mississippi.

There were 24 passengers and 2 crewmembers on board the aircraft. the 2 crewmembers and 4 of the passengers were killed; 20 others were injured. The aircraft was destroyed by impact; there was no fire.

The flight had reported to the Houston Air Route Traffic Control Center that it was ‘low on fuel’ and requested radar vectors to McComb, Mississippi. The aircraft crashed in a heavily wooded area during an attempted emergency landing.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probably cause of this accident was fuel exhaustion and total loss of power from both engines due to crew inattention to fuel supply. Contributing to the Carl [sic; I have no idea] exhaustion were inadequate flight planning and an engine malfunction of undetermined nature in the right engine which resulted in higher-than-normal fuel consumption.

Forensic scientists, more used to working with murder victims, have recreated the faces of seven of the about 500 men who died when the ship sank in 1545.

The new Mary Rose Museum has been dedicated to them, and it is through them the story of the ship is now being told.

1983: An in-flight fire forces Air Canada Flight 797 to make an emergency landing at Cincinnati; upon landing, a flashover ignited, killing 23 passengers. The fire had begun in the rear lavatory and was likely caused by a short circuit. Myriad new recommendations were issued by the FAA involving evacuation procedures and firefighting.

This picture was taken by the pilot of a 727 which had to go-around in order for the Air Canada DC-9 to land.

1915: Three passenger trains and two cargo trains are involved in a collision and fire at the Quintinshill signal junction near Gretna Green, Scotland. The vast majority of the 226 people killed are soldiers on the way to Gallipoli. The two signalmen involved are later tried and found responsible for the crash due to poor safety precautions. This remains the worst rail disaster in the UK.

Today there was a plane crash in Afghanistan that was really terrible. The plane exploded and a lot of people died but CNN made the title as “Plane crash: Kills 7 Americans”….umm wtf? Many people died on that plane, not just Americans.

Just because we are in America doesn’t mean that we are the superior people. They should’ve gave the number of how many people died on that plane.

Only 7 people died in this crash because it was a cargo flight. All were Americans.
