This Day In Wrecks
1864: Having been blockaded in the port of Cherbourg, France, by the USS Kearsarge, Captain Semmes of the CSS Alabama decides to try to fight his way out. During the battle, the Confederate sloop-of-war is outgunned by the chain-armoured Union vessel and her soldiers are forced to abandon ship as she sinks. The wreck is discovered in 1984.
Above is a painting of the battle by Manet.
