The first Atlantic ocean liner disaster happened a generation before the Titanic, when the SS Arctic struck another ship off Newfoundland in 1854, and sunk, killing 400 people.
The Arctic stuck the SS Vesta, a French ship, that made it back to shore. The photo above is a color-adjusted version of a Currier lithograph. Another Currier print shows the correct amount of masts:
