The wreck of the German submarine U-550 has been discovered about 70 miles off Nantucket. She sank on 4/16/1944, after a successful torpedo attack against the SS Pan-Pennsylvania, a gasoline tanker crossing the Atlantic in a convoy. Unable to escape sonar detection after the attack, the U-boat was sank in turn by the USS Joyce, Gandy and Peterson.
