1966: A K-135 tanker and a B-52 bomber collide during refueling over Palomares, Spain, killing all on the former and 3 of the 7 men on the latter. Three of the hydrogen bombs on the B-52 fall on Palomares and cause contamination, while the fourth is recovered at sea.
1997: The GPS IIR-1 satellite is destroyed 13 seconds after launch when the Delta II rocket carrying it malfunctions and explodes. Debris falling near the Cape Canaveral facility destroys 20 cars in the parking lot.
2008: British Airways Flight 38 crashes just short of the runway at London Heathrow when both engines lose thrust. Ice crystals had restricted fuel flow; no one is killed. (pictured)

The Vanguard TV3 was launched on December 6, 1957 at Cape Canaveral Kennedy Space Center. It was the first attempt by the United States to put a satellite into orbit around Earth. However, the rocket only rose a few feet before crashing violently back onto the launchpad.
