This Day In Wrecks
1978: A truck carrying liquefied propylene explodes in Alcanar, Spain, outside of a campground. The driver and 216 others are killed in the fire and vapor explosion, and many more die of their injuries later. (pictured)
1979: The orbit of NASA’s Skylab decays and the space station re-enters the atmosphere near Esperance, Australia. No one is injured by debris.
1991: An under-inflated tire on Nigeria Airways Flight 2120 catches fire during takeoff from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia and begins to burn through the hydralic and electrical systems of the DC-8. Eventually the fire consumes part of the cabin floor and causes structural damage, spilling passengers. The plane crashes before the crew can return to the airport and all 261 on board perish.
